A resting coconut crab on coconut leaf.
It was like a blue jewel, shining in afternoon sunlight. This guy is still a young one, the coconut crab can be a body length of up to 40 cm (16 in), a weight up to 4.1 kg (9 lb), and a leg span of more than 0.91 m (3 ft).
The coconut crab is eaten as a delicacy but when I was in Vanuatu, a local guy told me the number of coconut crabs are decreasing a lot. You cannot find them because they are a very territorial animal yet human don’t learn. They keep harvesting them, even young ones (This was in 2005) and when I went to Niue in 2015, I saw cooked coconut crab. It was heart breaking so I was very happy to see this beautiful and healthy young coconut crab 🙂
