Hawaii Island | Hawaii
The Kilauea eruption in 2017, This was the only place in the world lava met the Ocean.
Pele was the goddess of fire, while Namaka was the goddess of the sea, in Hawaiian culture. They were complete opposites and even though they were related, Pele and Namaka were enemies and fought each other.
In 1990, lava flows from the Kūpaʻianahā vent of the town of Kilauea, destroyed and partially buried most of the town. The lava flow that destroyed Kalapana erupted from the southeast rift zone of Kīlauea. Along with the destruction of Kalapana were those of the nearby town of Kaimu and Kaimū Bay, both of which now lie buried beneath more than 50 feet of lava. The lava flow created a new coastline.
Pele is the fire/lava goddess in Hawaii. Lava flow completely stops sometime on September/October in 2018 in Kalapana area.
